One of the pillars on the steps at the Library of Congress in Washington DC. The Library of Congress is a research library and is the oldest federal institution in the United States. It was established on April 24, 1800. Thomas Jefferson played an important role in the Library's early formation, signing into law on January 26, 1802, the first law establishing the structure of the Library of Congress. The Library also serves as a legal repository for copyright protection and copyright registration, and as the base for the United States Copyright Office.
