Vibrant orange poppies on a warm summer day at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens in New York.
The California Poppy is the state flower in California. The vibrant orange, cup-shaped flowers, are 2-4 inches in diameter, borne individually on long stalks. They are very easy to grow in gardens. They survive mild winters in its native range, dying completely in colder climates; growth is best in full sun and sandy, well-drained, soil.
